The World of Alchemy

The foundation of alchemy is the art of transmutation—the ability to transform one substance into another, more valuable one. This is a valuable skill for any craftsman, and it begins with understanding the structure of our world. At the core of everything lie two fundamental components: matter and essence.

Matter represents the physical substance that all objects are made of. Although in theory all matter is interchangeable, in practice an alchemist obtains low-quality matter from common items and rich matter from rare ones. Thus, matter is divided into seven quality levels: from F to A and S. There are rumors of an eighth "omega" level, but no evidence has been found so far.

Essence, in turn, is the metaphysical essence of an object. It cannot be interacted with directly; when not contained within an object, it must be dissolved. Thirteen types of essence are known in this world, named after celestial bodies and related concepts.

Matter gives essence substance, and essence gives matter form. By breaking down substances into these two elements and combining them in various ways, new substances can be created.

Alchemical Equipment

Alchemists actively use three main devices in their work: the calcination furnace, dissolution chamber, and synthesis table.

The calcination furnace uses solid fuel (the same as in a regular furnace) to burn the essence out of a substance, leaving only matter.

The dissolution chamber performs the opposite function—using alkahest (the universal solvent), it breaks down the matter of a substance, leaving its essence in solution.

Finally, matter and essence can be recombined on the synthesis table with a small sample of the desired substance to create more of the catalyst.

The basic versions of these devices extract only half of the theoretical yield of a substance. However, a philosopher's stone allows upgrading the equipment to faster and more efficient versions, if you can obtain one. It also enables the creation of a projection altar to upgrade matter levels.
