Ars Elemental - Elemental Magic for Ars Nouveau
This addon expands the magical system of Ars Nouveau by adding deep development of the four elemental schools of magic. The mod was created as part of the winter addon competition for Ars Nouveau 2021.
New Magical Glyphs
The mod offers various new glyphs for creating unique spells:
Watery Grave - water spell dealing drowning damage (available from version 1.18+) Conjure Terrain - creates different types of terrain depending on following glyphs: dirt, cobblestone, deepslate, sand, stone, sandstone, mud Homing Projectile - magical projectile that automatically finds the nearest living entity. Propagation version also available in 1.18+ Arc Projectile - projectile affected by gravity that can bounce when enhanced with piercing. Propagation version also available in 1.18+ Charm - allows taming a mob, making it breed, or temporarily enthralling an enemy to fight on your side (chance depends on amplification) Life Link - shares damage and healing with the target, but only with beneficial effects Poison Spores - earth variant of Flare and Cold Snap, activates only on poisoned or starving enemies and deals area damage with poison or hunger effects Discharge - air variant of Flare and Cold Snap, more complex to set up but with greater potential. Activates on electrified targets and gains damage boost if target wears RF-powered armor by draining energy from them Mana Bubble - water protective shield that consumes mana when taking damage to reduce it. Also gives chance to avoid negative effects. Shield pops when mana is depleted
Changes to Existing Mechanics
The mod introduces balance changes to basic Ars Nouveau spells:
• Ignite can now melt ice • Lightning no longer destroys dropped items • Cold Snap deals increased damage to frozen entities • Flare doesn't trigger when target is in water (but works under hellfire burn effect) • Crush can now target items when enhanced with sensitive glyph
Magical Equipment
The mod adds an extensive system of specialized equipment:
4 Lesser Spell Foci - allow early specialization in one of the four elemental schools, providing advantages with the corresponding element but disadvantages with others, and unlocking new effects for existing glyphs
5 Major Spell Foci - 4 of them are upgraded versions of lesser foci for complete mastery of elemental schools' power, and the fifth represents the dark Anima school with Necrotic Focus
5 Bangles - enhance spell damage and provide special passive abilities
Trinket Pouch - allows carrying all available magical items, warp scrolls, item scrolls, summon charms and other small items. Spellcaster Bag is intended for enchanting items and other magical weaponry. Both bags can be equipped in the "Bundle" slot and opened with a hotkey
Enchanter's Horn - in version 1.18 it's a wand for arc projectiles, in 1.19+ it's a casting tool that can be charged to cast spells on the caster and nearby entities. Greater charge means larger area of effect
Elemental Armors
Starting from version 1.19, the mod includes elemental armors from Ars Arsenal, redesigned for new armor models:
• Each piece amplifies glyphs of the corresponding elemental school • Each piece reduces damage from sources related to their element, providing temporary mana regeneration • When wearing the full set, part of the reduced damage is converted into mana. Other additional damage reduction effects may apply
New Creatures
Flare Cannon
Homing version of the fire guardian with a familiar that enhances fire and projectile spells. Can switch between magma and soul variants using magma blocks and soul sand (cosmetic change only).
The Siren
Farming creature, similar to Drygmy and Whirlisprigs, for collecting fishing drops. Chance of getting treasure increases depending on the diversity of flora and fauna in their "aquarium". Available in different colors that can be changed using corals or kelp.
Development Plans
• Adding enemy mages with preset spell sets (as rare mini-bosses) • Small structures for atmosphere, possibly larger ones in the future
