Better Enchanting - Complete Enchantment System Overhaul

Better Enchanting mod offers a fundamental transformation of the enchantment system in Minecraft. Instead of the traditional random enchanting process, it now features a skill-tree system, and enchanted books have been completely removed from the game.

The core concept of the mod is to more closely tie enchantments to world exploration and game progression. It's no longer possible to acquire a full set of enchantments before battling the Ender Dragon.

Installation and Requirements

The mod requires installation on both client and server sides and works with Fabric or Quilt loaders. Designed for Minecraft 1.21+ and uses Fabric API. Backward compatibility with older versions is not planned due to changes in enchantment handling in the new game version.

Main Changes

The enchanting table interface has been completely redesigned. When placing an item in the slot, all available enchantments for it are displayed. The number of visible enchantments depends on bookshelves around the table, as in the vanilla version.

A third slot has appeared - "Enchantment Ingredient". Each enchantment now requires a unique item or block in addition to lapis lazuli and experience levels.

New enchanting interface

Most ingredients are vanilla items, but for higher-level enchantments and treasures, materials are required that can only be found in specific locations (such as Ancient City for Swift Sneak) or expensive crafted items (for example, Protection IV requires "Essence of Protection").

Additional Changes

  • Anvils no longer require experience for item repair (only for renaming)
  • Cannot combine two enchanted items
  • Added upgrade templates for iron and diamonds, allowing stone tools to be upgraded to iron, and gold or iron tools to diamond
  • Librarians no longer sell enchanted books but may offer enchantment ingredients of various rarities
  • Enchanted books can no longer be found in the world - they have been replaced with corresponding ingredients
  • Most tools can be enchanted with "secondary enchantments" (such as Efficiency on shears or Thorns on any armor), and axes are compatible with most sword enchantments
  • Added an "Enchantment Catalyst" that can store enchantments removed at the grindstone and be used at the anvil similarly to enchanted books

Compatibility and Configuration

The configuration file enchantment_ingredients.json allows modifying ingredients for each enchantment. Items from Minecraft or other mods can be used following the standard notation modName:item_name.

The mod is compatible with the official data pack for villager trade balancing. Full compatibility with custom items and recipes is provided for the following mods:

  • Neoenchant
  • The Bumblezone
  • Dungeons and taverns
  • Horseshoes
  • Toss Up
  • Spell Engine
  • Combat Roll
