Crimson Curse: Infection - Complete Survival Guide

Crimson Curse Banner

Long ago, a deadly virus that was dormant in the Crimson Forests of the Nether infiltrated the Overworld. Through the ruined portals that can still be found in the world, the pathogen entered a new habitat. In cooler conditions, it formed a symbiotic relationship with the zombie virus from the standard game, allowing it not just to survive, but to rapidly evolve into terrifying life forms.

Five in-game days after world creation, the first Bloodlink appears - a mob capable of infecting the surrounding territory. As long as you stay away from its zone of influence, the infection doesn't pose a serious threat. However, one node quickly turns into two, then three, and soon you'll find that once harmless Crimson Invaders are evolving and breaking through the walls of your base. If you don't destroy the Bloodlinks in time, the infection can become almost unstoppable with regular gear. By killing new mobs, you get materials to create more powerful weapons and armor.

For survival, you'll need excellent knowledge of vanilla game mechanics (including block hardness), as well as readiness for instant death if you're careless. Monitor your armor durability, build bases in strategically advantageous locations using strong materials, remember that Crimson Invaders are immune to fire but vulnerable to the Smite enchantment (due to connection with the zombie virus), and be careful in your explorations. Good luck!

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

You should see a red and gray book when you first load up a world. If you don't then you installed something incorrectly….

For versions 1.3+, the project requires installation of Entity Model Features and Entity Texture Features mods, otherwise many elements won't display correctly.

When creating a world with this mod/datapack, a warning may appear. Just click "I know what I'm doing!" as there are actually no risks - this is a game error that will be fixed soon.

The project is currently not compatible with most mods that add custom blocks. The game will work, but the infection won't be able to break or infect certain blocks. Starting from version 1.1, Biomes O' Plenty, Friends&Foes and Traveler's Backpack are guaranteed to work with the infection.

To reduce time spent on routine tasks, it's recommended to use mods/datapacks with gravestones and veinminers.

If you have gameplay questions, PLEASE READ the "Show Spoiler" sections before contacting the Discord server.

MAIN SYSTEMS

Phases and Points

The infection develops through 5 phases, each determining strength and events. Phases are controlled by points that are awarded when mass threshold is reached.

Mass and Thresholds

Mass is a temporary scoring system that increases from infecting blocks and mobs. When a certain threshold is reached, mass resets to 0, an event occurs depending on the current phase, and one point is added.

Phase/Points/Mass Threshold ratio: 0/-∞--1/1000, 1/0-9/1000, 2/10-39/3000, 3/40-149/6000, 4/150-299/8000, 5/300+/7000

Crimson Siphoners and Blighters

Craftable items capable of removing infection points and mass. Mass can go into negative values, and in this case all Bloodlinks will take 1 damage every 20 seconds until death or until mass becomes non-negative.

Bloodlink Power

Each mob (except Bloodlinks, Raidlinks and Titans) can receive temporary enhancement of attributes and/or abilities, unique to each mob type.

Raids

Can randomly occur when mass threshold is reached from phases 2 to 5. Raids find a random player in the world and create a Raidlink and Raidlink Pods nearby. If the raid isn't stopped by destroying the Raidlink, a new infected area can form.

MOB TYPES

Crimson and Decayed Mobs

Crimson mobs appear randomly or when a regular mob enters an infected area. Decayed mobs are enhanced versions of Crimson ones, appearing randomly from phases 3 to 5 and able to perform parkour to overcome small obstacles.

  • Human: Strong melee fighter. Drops Infected Flesh
  • Skeleton: Crimson shoot poisonous projectiles, Decayed shoot withering ones. Drops Infected Flesh and Arrows
  • Husk: Fast melee fighter capable of climbing blocks. Drops Infected Flesh
  • Villager: Strong melee fighter. Drops Infected Flesh
  • Drowned: Incredibly fast swimmer with stats similar to Infected Human. Trident variants swim slower but throw Crimson Tridents that drag victims to the ocean floor when hitting. Drops Infected Flesh

Key Infection Mobs

Bloodlink: Main enemy of the infection; appears after 5 days in a random location and infects territory around itself, turning it into Crimson Infection biome, then Crimson Decay biome. Has 3 stages determining their strength. Stage 1 nodes cannot infect blocks with hardness 5 and above, stage 2 - with hardness 10 and above, while stage 3 nodes have no limitations. When threatened, they enter attack mode, create Pods and Sentries around themselves, and periodically give nearby Crimson Invaders Bloodlink Power.

Distributor: Stationary but dangerous intelligent enemy with huge range of abilities. Appears on phase 3+ when 3 Decayed mobs are nearby and no other Distributor is close. These mobs passively set livestock bait traps, summon Bloodlink Sentries, and give mobs Bloodlink Power.

CRAFTING AND GEAR

Crimson Survival Guide: Contains all project crafting recipes. Given to each player upon first entering the world. To recreate, use 3 paper and Infected Flesh.

GAMEPLAY COMMANDS (V1.2+)

Several commands to change current infection state and check its progress, including forced infection start, setting mass, points and phase, triggering infection events, and getting data.

CONFIGURATION OPTIONS (V1.2+)

Options to configure maximum infection speed, infection spread radius, and drill limit.

PLANNED CONTENT

Performance improvements, new mobs, weapons, armor ability overhaul, improved survival guide, and much more.
