Enhanced Hordes in Minecraft

The Enhanced Hordes mod fundamentally changes mob behavior, making them smarter and more dangerous. Zombies can now climb on each other to reach you, skeletons avoid shooting their comrades, and iron golems gain new abilities to deal with enhanced hordes.

Smart Zombies

Zombie hordes have become much more dangerous with new capabilities:

  • Zombies can climb on each other, forming living ladders - height no longer guarantees complete safety
  • Ability to dig up other zombies from underground - just hit a zombie once to prevent multiplication
  • Fire spreads between zombies on contact - a single spark can ignite an entire horde
  • Burning zombies move significantly faster
  • Can throw baby zombies while climbing
  • Can break through blocks like ice and leaves when colliding

In version 1.18: zombies dig up zombies of the same type, husks dig up husks. This excludes zombie villagers.

In version 1.19: all horde mobs dig up regular zombies due to implementation changes.

Intelligent Mobs

Some mobs received improved behavior:

  • Skeletons put away their bows when other skeletons are nearby
  • Skeletons also put away their bows when you get too close
  • After punching, skeletons dash backward and re-equip their bows
  • Piglins use swords in melee combat and crossbows at range
  • Zombified piglins retain some intelligence and attempt to use crossbows at distance, but shoot inaccurately
  • Skeletons no longer attack other skeletons, piglins don't attack other piglins or brutes

Except when the bow is enchanted or has special properties.

Other Mob Improvements

  • Slimes can stack and spread fire just like zombies
  • Iron golems can hit multiple enemies with one swing
  • Iron golems are immune to fire unless standing directly in flame or lava
  • Complete immunity to wither, poison, and levitation effects
  • Resistance to arrows - most bounce off
  • Speed up when villagers become attack targets
  • Natural health regeneration when no danger is present
  • Wither skeletons with bows use them like regular skeletons
  • Spiders and cave spiders can leap toward targets that are too high to reach

*Only mobs currently targeting the iron golem or a villager. Doesn't work with players.

Configuration via Datapacks

The mod supports extensive configuration through entity tags:

  • Add a mob to the "forge:hordes" tag to allow zombies from any mod to join hordes
  • For skeletons and piglins, use "forge:intelligent_teams" or "forge:intelligent_piglins" tags for weapon swapping and dashing
  • Mobs in intelligent team tags cannot attack each other
  • "forge:horde_destroyable" tag determines which blocks can be destroyed by hordes
  • "forge:hidden_zombie_blocks" tag controls blocks from which zombies can dig up other zombies
  • "forge:horde_grave_robbers" tag defines which mobs can dig themselves up (1.18.2 only)
  • "forge:leaping_mobs" tag defines leaping mobs (1.18.2 only)

Game rules HordeStacking, HordeMultiplying, and ironGolemRegenPower are also available for convenient configuration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What does the "Thinking" potion effect do?
A: Used as a timer for actions instead of NBT timers. Removing the effect stops zombie digging, allows skeletons/piglins to instantly swap weapons, and enables iron golems to start regenerating.

Q: How to add a mob to an entity tag?
A: Create a datapack and add the "hordes.json" file to the data\forge\tags\entity_types\ folder

Default hordes.json file:

{
 "replace": false,
 "values": [
 "drowned",
 "zombie",
 "husk",
 "zombified_piglin",
 "zombie_villager",
 "slime"
 ]
}

Q: Is the mod compatible with other mods?
A: Yes, in most cases. Known issues only occur with the Solid Mobs mod, which disables zombie intersection - the foundation of this mod's functionality.

Q: Can I use this in my modpack?
A: Yes!

Q: Support for other versions?
A: Only for specified versions. Support for other versions is not planned.
