Hiccup's Legacy

CHRISTMAS UPDATE:

The latest update brings numerous changes - updated models, textures, code, new weapons and blocks have been added. This is truly a massive update!

Hiccup's Legacy is a modification inspired by the "How to Train Your Dragon" animated series, adding tameable dragons, weapons and armor, plants, and many new mechanics to Minecraft.

DRAGONS

Currently, the mod features 15 different dragon species:

  • Night Fury
  • Hideous Zippleback
  • Deadly Nadder
  • Gronckle
  • Monstrous Nightmare
  • Whispering Death
  • Smoothering Smokebreath
  • Flightmare
  • Hobgobbler
  • Night Terror
  • Terrible Terror
  • Fireworm
  • Death Song
  • Light Fury
  • Speed Stinger

Most dragons have unique attacks. By default, keys R and X control primary and secondary attacks for all rideable dragons. Keys G and K are used for catching prey and enabling/disabling landing during flight respectively.

Types of prey that can be caught while flying dragons:

  • Yaks
  • Cows
  • Pigs
  • Chickens
  • Sheep

To catch prey, you need to fly very close to it and press G. In such situations, it's useful to disable landing by pressing K.

NEW MECHANICS

Dragons that are under a ceiling and unable to fly because of it will shed scales over time. These scales can be used to create new armor by combining them with a slime ball, gronckle iron hammer, and leather armor.

Also added is a new game rule "villagerDisease", which when set to false prevents villagers from contracting eel pox (this random feature can be quite annoying).

DRAGON TAMING

Currently, there is a simplified taming system - to ride a dragon, simply right-click it and look almost straight up, after which it will take flight. The only fully tameable dragon is the Hobgobbler, which can be tamed with most types of fish and will follow you within an 8-block radius.

PLANTS

The mod features 4 types of plants: Dagga, Dragon Nip, Angel Fern, and Dragon Root.

By combining 2 Dragon Nips, 1 Dagga, and 1 Lily of the Valley, you can create a Cure Mixture, which can be used with a bucket (can heal other mobs and you, easier to make but 1 mixture = 1 cure) or brewed with bottles (cannot heal other mobs but is more cost-effective since 1 mixture = up to 3 cures for you).

Dragon Root can be found in forests. When right-clicked, it exposes roots that can be harvested. The flower, the visible part of the plant, can be broken to obtain seeds that can be planted. When the plant is fully grown (they are immune to bone meal, so you have to wait), you have 2 options:

  • Right-click to get the roots
  • Break it for increased seed drops (but without the plant's roots)

It's recommended to balance between these two methods for efficient farming.

Dragon Root can be sliced by placing it in any crafting slot. Sliced pieces can be used on a cauldron with a heat source underneath to make Dragon Root "soup". This soup, when used with an arrow, gives a tipped arrow of poison (can be used twice for each slice). After use, the cauldron returns to its empty state.

Dragon Root slices can be crafted with yak milk, brown mushroom, and a bowl to get Dragon Nip Stew, which, besides providing a lot of food and saturation, works in two ways:

  • Cures most effects, good or bad, related to movement speed (such as mining fatigue and speed) - 90% chance
  • Makes you nauseous and poisoned - 10% chance

This behavior is related to the uncertain effects of Dragon Root in the human diet.

Angel Fern is a small plant found in coniferous forests, bluish-white in color with interesting properties. Any animal standing on it gets reduced walking speed but significant jump increase, useful for climbing trees and escaping predators. If harvested, it can be used with an awkward potion to create a slow falling potion.

Colored plants like Dagga and Angel Fern can be turned into dyes, and all small plants can be used to create suspicious stew.

The cure serves for the new disease - eel pox. The infection process is uncertain, but you only have 10 minutes to make one of these cures before dying. During these 10 minutes, bad effects will start appearing, such as mining fatigue, slowness, and blindness, so act quickly.

ANIMALS

Yaks - a new type of "cow" in the game, are an excellent source of food and fur, the latter of which can be crafted into fur blocks and carpets similar to wool.

Their milk can be used in a Milk Pot (crafted with a bucket and a stick on the right) to make 3 types of new food:

  • Chocolate Yak Milk - made with yak milk, cocoa beans, and sugar, gives Speed 3 for several seconds (+ saturation and food)
  • Yaknog - similar to eggnog, but made with yak milk, eggs, and kelp, provides a lot of saturation and food value, being an excellent food choice
  • Glow Cheese - made with yak milk, glow lichen, and bone meal, gives the glowing effect as well as food and saturation

WEAPONS

The mod features 2 special weapons: Hiccup's Inferno Sword and Heather's Axe.

Both can be crafted, though it's recommended to use JEI for the recipes as they are quite different from the usual ones.

Hiccup's Inferno Sword can be activated with right-click in its retracted state to switch to one of the two states below:

  • Extended sword without fire
  • Extended sword with fire (needs to have Monstrous Nightmare Gel in inventory)

Heather's Axe when crafted has closed and extended states. The closed state, although dealing less damage, works like an axe, while its counterpart works as a sword (cool with combat mods like Better Combat).

TECHNICAL DETAILS

By giving a Gronckle the Gronckle Iron Mixture (crafted with 3 calcites, 2 sandstones, 1 obsidian, 1 raw iron, and a bucket), you can obtain gronckle iron - a powerful and lightweight material for making all kinds of weapons.

Special thanks to MsChomper for help with models and sounds!

Note: SOME models and their parts are indeed inspired by the paid DLC for Minecraft Bedrock Edition. Some of them you will see the resemblance, but for obvious reasons, not all of them are, and all models I made myself, with different choices, styles, and designs.
