Larion World Generation
Larion is a terrain generation modification that completely reworks the style and structure of world creation in the spirit of modern vanilla "epic fantasy". This approach creates otherworldly, surreal landscapes reminiscent of dreams.
Main Changes
The mod radically changes the shape of terrain, cave generation and distribution of biomes, while preserving the original biomes and their features unchanged. This allows combining Larion with other compatible biome-altering mods or using it in a close-to-vanilla version, as shown in the screenshots.
It's important to note that mod development continues, and future updates will almost always change world generation principles, which will break the integrity of previously created territories. It's not recommended to update the mod on existing worlds if you're concerned about sharp chunk borders.
Key Features
- Expanded world height range: from -128 to 512 blocks
- Oceans have become truly endless with islands and continents of various sizes. If you spawned on a small island, large land masses are likely far away
- Temperature zones are distributed in vertical bands instead of random spots
- Terrain erosion is organized completely differently, creating unique landscape forms: mountains, hills, plains and swampy areas
- Rivers have become long and winding, forming deep valleys in mountain areas. In rare cases, they can pass through cliffs
- Small-scale terrain is also significantly changed thanks to a special horizontal axis deformation technique that replaces standard 3D noise. This makes cliffs and precipices more impressive
- Steep slopes show stone surfaces in all biomes, and moderately steep hills have a smooth transition from stone to normal surface
Recommended Add-ons
For complete immersion, I strongly recommend using Distant Horizons and pre-generating the world so that the scale of the new landscape makes an impression from the very beginning.
It also pairs excellently with William Wyther's Overhauled Overworld - a true work of art whose visual style perfectly suits Larion. Be sure to use the datapack version, as the mod version may cause loading order issues. If mountains are cut off at around Y=320, open the WWOO archive and delete the files:
1-20-5-overlay/data/minecraft/dimension_type/overworld.json
1-21-overlay/data/minecraft/dimension_type/overworld.json
data/minecraft/dimension_type/overworld.json
Some seeds may place you in water or on a tiny island in the middle of the ocean. For more predictability when creating a world, I recommend World Preview.
Performance Optimization
Larion significantly increases world generation complexity, so I recommend installing optimization mods:
- C2ME - greatest performance boost, but can be unstable
- Noisium
- Faster Random
- FerriteCore
Compatibility
As a rule, mods and datapacks that modify Minecraft's density functions (in worldgen/density_functions) are incompatible with Larion and may create strange artifacts in the world. Any mods that change terrain shape or caves do not work with Larion, including Terralith, Tectonic, Litosphere, Big Globe, Expanded Echosphere and Cascades.
However, mods and datapacks that only add or change biome features should be fully compatible.
