What Does Lightspeed Do?
This mod optimizes Minecraft's startup process, significantly reducing loading time when using heavy modpacks. Currently, Lightspeed speeds up game launch by 48-62% compared to standard loading.
The project is actively developed, and with each update optimizations will be added gradually, ensuring stable operation and continuous performance improvement. To track progress, the mod displays launch time on the title screen.
Why Was This Mod Created?
The author personally faced the problem of long loading times when using a pack of 273 mods for Minecraft 1.18.2. Even on a modern computer, startup took 7 minutes, on a 2015 system — about 15 minutes, and on a 2018 laptop — over 20 minutes. Such waiting clearly doesn't please players.
Development Plans
Current loading speed improvement is 48-62%, but with each update this indicator is planned to be improved by at least 10%. The ultimate goal is to make game launch 3-4 times faster. This means that 7-minute loading will be reduced to 2 minutes, 15 minutes — to 4 minutes, and so on.
Working Principles
To achieve maximum efficiency, Lightspeed follows several key principles:
- Efficiency over multithreading: Not everyone has gaming processors with 12, 16 or 20 cores, so the mod uses caching and other methods to minimize operations
- Minimal intervention: Although the mod changes source code, it's not a complete overhaul — all changes are made with maximum care
- Maximum compatibility: The goal is compatibility with almost all existing mods
- Configurability: If some optimizations conflict with other mods, they can be disabled in the configuration file
How Does It Work?
Minecraft and Forge use inefficient or redundant methods for loading, storing and processing data. Lightspeed replaces problematic algorithms with more optimal ones, which is confirmed by testing. Main optimization directions:
- Reducing file system operations (especially reading)
- Parallelizing suitable processes
- Caching computed results and data
- Improved data structures
