Minema - Professional Video Recording in Minecraft

Minema is a powerful mod for video recording and offline rendering in Minecraft. Originally developed by BarracudaATA, the project has been further enhanced through the efforts of Daipenger, McHorse, with contributions from MiaoNLI, Chryfi, and Sekwah.

Key Features

The mod enables recording gameplay with incredible smoothness - demonstration video shows shooting in 1080p at 60 frames per second with supersampling from 4K, render distance up to 64 chunks, and shadows up to 4096x4096 pixels. All this is achievable even on a GTX 750 Ti level graphics card.

Core Functions:

  • Game recording with options to save color channel, alpha channel, or depth map (with 8-bit, 16-bit, or 32-bit floating point variants)
  • Realistic motion blur affecting not only the camera but all moving objects
  • Support for 360-degree video recording
  • Export of tracking keyframes for After Effects with import capability into Blender via a special addon
  • Automatic saving of each frame in TGA format or encoding into a single MP4 file (h264, yuv420p color format) using FFMpeg
  • Synchronization of game engine and Optifine/karyonix shader pipeline with recording frame rate
  • Setting any resolution for recording, including values higher than screen resolution
  • Two technologies for significantly accelerating chunk loading during recording

Using the Mod

After installing the mod via Forge, recording can be started and stopped with the F4 key (or Shift + F4 for advanced settings), as well as with "/minema enable" and "/minema disable" commands. Mod developers can easily integrate with Minema using these commands.

Mod configuration is available through the menu: Mods → Minema → Configuration. Hovering over each parameter displays its description. For camera work, compatible tools are recommended: simple BauerCam or more advanced Aperture.

FFMpeg Setup

For creating MP4 files, FFMpeg installation is required. Linux users can install it via package manager, while Windows users can download the build and place the ffmpeg.exe file in the root Minecraft installation folder. After installation, activate the 'Use video encoder' option in the mod settings.

For Developers

The project uses the standard Gradle build system, like most Forge mods. To get started, it's recommended to execute the "gradle setupDecompWorkspace" task and familiarize yourself with beginner developer guides.
