Nether Update Expanded

Attention: The mod is in beta testing stage, so updates may break compatibility with existing worlds, especially when removing any features.

Important requirement: Versions Beta 1.24 and newer require the Geckolib mod to be installed.

Nether Update Expanded is a vanilla+ style mod that significantly expands the Nether's possibilities, adding many new features with each update.

Main Features

Fungal Jungles

These unique mushroom-based forests come in two variants: ancient and dragon. Ancient fungal jungles have a purple hue and contain elderberries, while dragon jungles feature pink coloration and may reward you with dragon fruit. Each jungle type offers its own unique wood type.

Frosted Nether

This region consists of biomes so cold they cannot be melted. Attempts to place water here will result in instant freezing. In frosted wastes, you can discover Nether fortresses and fossils, while frosted forests contain a new wood type and sleetberries.

Crimson Valley

This vast open crimson area lacks fungi and piglins but doesn't become safer because of it. Hoglin, zombified piglins, and even zoglins inhabit this area. Aggressive zoglins may attack anything, creating unpredictable and dangerous situations.

New Minerals

Various Nether biomes generate numerous new stones. Some are exclusive to specific biomes, while others are found everywhere:

  • Elderrack (purple stone, only in fungal jungles)
  • Draconite (pink stone, only in fungal jungles)
  • Crimsonite (red stone, only in crimson forests and valleys)
  • Netherwarp (blue-green stone, only in warped forests)
  • Soul Slate (brown stone, only in soul sand valleys)
  • Zaronite (gray stone, only in soul sand valleys)
  • Quarsite (white quartz-based stone)
  • Ironite (brown iron-containing stone)
  • Pyrirock (yellow stone)
  • Monolite (green stone)

Ores

Several new ore types have been added, divided into three categories: Nether, Blackstone, and Plasphite.

Nether ores are based on netherrack, similar to existing gold and quartz ores. Coal, iron, lapis lazuli, redstone, emeralds, and diamonds now have their Nether variants. A new material called verbo has also been added.

Blackstone ores are based on blackstone. Each Nether ore has its blackstone counterpart, including quartz, gold, and verbo.

Plasphite ores represent mineral deposits encased in a hard zaronite shell. Plasphite can contain various materials including netherrack, blackstone, basalt, magma blocks, bone blocks, gravel, obsidian, crying obsidian, siprute shards, gold nuggets, iron nuggets, netherite nuggets, lapis lazuli, verbo shards, and diamonds.

Verbo Material

Verbo is a new metallic material that can be mined from Nether verbo ore and blackstone verbo ore, with a chance to drop from plasphite ore.

Verbo can be used to create a verbo pick axe. Unlike regular tools, this versatile tool combines the functions of a sword, pickaxe, axe, and shovel - very convenient! In versions before Beta 3.23, crafting also required a siprute shard.

Verbo has a special function - nitrogenization, though the mechanism differs between versions.

Verbo blocks image

After Beta 3.23: Similar to copper oxidation, verbo-based blocks slowly nitrogenize in the Overworld and Nether. This process doesn't occur in the End dimension due to lack of atmosphere. In the Nether with its sealed nitrogen-rich atmosphere, nitrogenization occurs quite quickly. In the Overworld with an open atmosphere and less nitrogen, the process typically takes much longer but can accelerate when close to a nitrogen source. Multiple sources don't stack the effect. The following blocks/fluids are considered nitrogen sources:

  • Fire
  • Soul Fire
  • Lava (flowing or still)
  • Lava Cauldrons
  • Magma Blocks
  • Soul Magma Blocks

Nitrogenization examples

Verbo won't nitrogenize if any of the six adjacent blocks have a lower nitrogenization level, except when the adjacent block is glazed. To glaze a verbo block, use a bowl of elderberry syrup or combine them in crafting as a sort of sealant preventing further nitrogenization. Fully nitrogenized verbo blocks can also be glazed. Glaze can be scraped off with an axe, which also reduces the block's nitrogenization level.

Nitrogenization conditions demonstration

Before Beta 3.23: Verbo-based blocks slowly nitrogenized in any dimension. Nitrogenization effects could be reversed by combining a nitrogenized block with magma cream in crafting, or completely stopped by combining a verbo block with a siprute shard before full nitrogenization.

Arm Guards

Arm guards are a new armor type that can be equipped in the player's offhand. Available in iron, gold, diamond, and netherite variants.

Elderberries

Dark purple elderberries can be found and grown on elderberry bushes in ancient fungal jungles. These berries are edible and provide significant saturation. They can also be combined with sugar and a bottle or bowl to make juice or syrup. Syrup can be used to enhance the following foods:

  • Apple
  • Baked Potato
  • Beetroot
  • Bread
  • Carrot
  • Dried Icicle Reed
  • Dried Kelp

Elderberries can also be combined with two wheat to make elderberry cookies or with sugar and an egg to make elderberry pie.

Dragon Fruit

Light pink dragon fruit can be found or grown on dragon fruit cacti in dragon fungal jungles. This highly nutritious fruit can save you in a pinch. Eating dragon fruit while burning, levitating, poisoned, or withered helps counteract the effects, giving you more time to escape danger!
