Night Terror - Nightmares from the Past Return

Animation showing a player being woken by a zombie

If you remember the earliest versions of Minecraft, you're likely familiar with the danger that awaited players during sleep. Night Terror revives the forgotten mechanic from the alpha and beta versions of the game.

In older versions, sleeping in insufficiently lit areas could be interrupted by a sudden zombie or skeleton attack. Starting with Minecraft 1.0.0, this system was replaced by the standard message about being unable to sleep near monsters.

How the Modification Works

When all players on the server should wake up, the game scans the area around each bed. If poorly lit areas within reach are detected and RNG isn't in your favor, a hostile mob will suddenly appear near the bed. Instead of morning light, you'll find yourself in the same dark night.

Multiplayer Features

In multiplayer mode, if someone's sleep is interrupted by a monster, all participants will wake up - and find themselves back in the middle of the night.

Customization for Your Needs

The mod is designed with modpacks in mind, offering flexible configuration through the nightterror-common.toml file:

The check_range parameter determines the distance at which the game searches for dark zones. The probability of dangerous awakening is adjusted by terror_chance with difficulty modifiers (0.5 for Peaceful, 0.75 for Easy, 1 for Normal, and 1.5 for Hard). The interrupt_sleep option allows delaying attacks until wake-up time, while wake_damage sets damage during sudden awakening. You can even expand the list of creatures that can interrupt sleep through waking_entities - the system supports both standard mobs and those added by other modifications.

Important Details

Sometimes Minecraft's pathfinding algorithms don't work entirely logically, especially with slabs or height differences. In such cases, even dark areas on the roof can be perceived as threats. If you encounter this issue, simply place more light sources around your shelter or reduce the check radius in the configuration.
