Overgeared is a Minecraft mod that overhauls how tools and armors are crafted, introducing a forging system that rewards player skill and preparation. Inspired by mods like Hot Iron and TerraFirmaCraft, Overgeared brings a fresh, immersive crafting experience focused on customization and progression.
This mod is fully compatible with data packs and uses a recipe format based on vanilla crafting for easy integration. Just Enough Items (JEI) is highly recommended to explore recipes.
New Items and Blocks
Steel Equipment
Adds a full line of steel tools and armor, bridging the gap between iron and diamond.
Smithing Hammer
Comes in Steel and Copper variant. Used to begin the forging process. Sneak + right-click on a Smithing Anvil to start a forging minigame or on a Stone block to convert it to a Stone Anvil.
Smithing Tongs
Available in iron and steel variants. Hold them in either hand to protect yourself from heated metal.
Smithing Anvil
The main workstation for forging items. Place ingredients in the 3×3 grid and activate forging using a Smithing Hammer. The forging minigame determines the quality of the result.
Stone Anvil
An early-game version of the Smithing Anvil. Can be made by crouch right click on a Stone block with any Smithing Hammer in hand.
- Requires fewer resources
- Has limited uses
- Can only make up to Well Forged tier
- Supports limited early-game forging (e.g., iron tools)
- Used to progress into full forging capabilities
Rock Knapping System
Inspired by traditional flint knapping. Craft stone tool parts via a click-based 3x3 interface.
- Obtain rocks by repeatedly right-clicking flint on stone blocks
- Use rocks in a special UI to craft stone tool heads
Forging System and Tool Quality
Forging replaces traditional crafting for tools and armor. Once materials are placed into the Smithing Anvil, players must perform a timing-based minigame with the Smithing Hammer. The better your timing, the higher the Forging Quality of the output.
Possible quality levels:
- Poorly Forged
- Well Forged
- Expertly Forged
- Perfectly Forged
- Masterwork (rare chance or guaranteed with blueprint)
Forging Quality directly affects:
- Durability
- Attack Damage
- Attack Speed
- Mining Speed
Tool Head Modifiers
Many tool parts now have Polished and Unpolished states, which affect the maximum possible quality when forging the final item.
- Unpolished parts are the default form
- Use a Grindstone to polish them
- Unpolished tool heads when crafted into tools will decrease forging quality
