Passive Hunger
The Passive Hunger modification changes the standard hunger mechanics in Minecraft, making them more realistic. In the vanilla version of the game, the character can stand still indefinitely without losing satiety—this feature always seemed implausible to me.
Now the hunger system works differently: the character's exhaustion level constantly increases with every game tick, even if they're doing nothing. This causes hunger to gradually decrease regardless of the player's activity.
Basic Settings
By default, exhaustion increases by 0.001 with each tick. With these settings, half a hunger icon will be lost approximately every 200 seconds. However, you can easily reconfigure this parameter through server configuration and choose a comfortable rate of exhaustion for yourself.
How the Hunger System Works
Every time 4 units of exhaustion accumulate, this indicator resets to zero and 1 point of saturation is subtracted (equivalent to half a hunger icon). When the saturation reserve is exhausted, the system starts reducing the character's actual hunger level directly.
This approach is especially useful for multiplayer servers—it helps deal with players who remain in the game but don't show any activity.
