Primitive Tools - Primitive Survival Tools
Mod Overview
Primitive Tools is a survival modification that completely reworks the early stages of the game. This mod creates a smooth transition from primitive technologies to more advanced tools, perfectly fitting into vanilla Minecraft.
The developers aimed to find a balance between realism and ease of use, creating a system that will organically work with the author's other popular mods.
Game Start
Your adventure begins with searching for basic resources: flint, plant fibers, and sticks. Flint can be obtained from gravel or found with a small chance in sand. Fibers are collected from tall grass and ferns, while sticks are obtained traditionally from wood.
Key Features
The mod introduces several important changes to game mechanics:
- Recipes for standard wooden and stone tools are removed
- Flint requires processing on a hard surface before use
- Primitive tools work slower on inappropriate materials
- Tool durability depends on the quality of materials used for crafting
- Primitive tools cannot be enchanted
- Arrow recipe changed - now requires flint point
Tools and Their Applications
Knife
The knife is your first and most important tool. It's the fastest weapon in the game and a universal crafting tool.
Main functions:
- Deals critical damage to animals
- Effectively breaks leaves, mushrooms, pumpkins, grass, and cacti
- Turns wool into string
- Creates sticks from saplings
- Makes cordage from vines
- Cuts leather into strips
Wooden Club
The club provides protection at the beginning of the game. Despite low damage and slow attack speed, it has a powerful knockback effect, giving time to switch to the knife.
Spear
The spear is a long-range combat and hunting weapon. Spears stack up to 8 pieces and function similarly to a bow. Future updates plan to add fishing capability and a breakage system depending on materials.
Rock Hammer
The rock hammer is currently similar to a pickaxe. For its creation, igneous rocks must be used since flint is too brittle. Future updates plan to add in-world crushing recipes and resource mining areas.
Planned hammer functions:
- Turning stone into cobblestone, gravel, and sand
- Crushing ores into dust
Axe, Hoe, Pickaxe, and Shovel
These tools currently don't have special functions compared to vanilla counterparts. Their characteristics are between wooden and stone tools.
Integration with Leather Works
When Leather Works mod is installed, automatic integration occurs:
- Uses leather strips from Leather Works
- Any knife can create leather strips
- Flint shears crafting gives 3 instead of 4 units
- Any knife can strip bark from trees faster than flint
- Knives are used for cleaning hides
Technical Details
Tool durability is calculated using the formula: round(head * (binding + rod)), where default values can be found in the source code.
Other technical parameters:
- Spear throwing range: 40 meters
- Vine collection chance with knife: 25%
- Grass drop multiplication with knife: 5 times
- Fiber collection chance with knife: 30% (base 17%)
- Flint collection chance from sand with knife: 20% (base 11%)
- Knife damage to animals: 8 hearts
Planned Updates
- Early game fire starting system
- In-world recipes for knives and hammers
- Additional knife recipes, including carving
- Quartz processing
- Spear break chance
- Addition of grindstone
