Self-Sustaining – True Survival Challenge
The Self-Sustainable mod completely overhauls Minecraft's survival mechanics to create a more challenging and realistic experience. Fire-starting now requires skill, food becomes scarce, and every action has consequences. You'll need to carefully plan your movements, use resources wisely, and adapt to the harsh conditions of this new world.
⚔️ Core Gameplay Changes
🔥 Fire Starting Overhauled
- Fire plough and bow drill – new fire-starting tools that require holding down the button instead of instant use.
- Flint and steel – currently the most effective fire-starting method, works similarly to other tools but ignites fire much faster.
🧱 Brick Making Changed
- Bricks now require sun drying ☀️ or firing in an oven (after obtaining one).
🍖 Food System Adjustments
- Saturation reworked 🍖 – all food items now restore less hunger and provide no saturation.
- Penalties for raw food 🤮 – eating raw products has a high chance of applying the hunger effect (renamed to food poisoning) to the player.
🏃 Stamina and Exhaustion
- Periodic exhaustion ⏳ – players will gradually lose hunger even while idle, preventing infinite AFK gameplay.
- Increased energy consumption during movement:
- Jumping and sprinting now consume more stamina.
- Sprint-jumping drains energy even more significantly.
- This makes early-game movement more strategic.
Features compatible with the "I'm Movens" mod: the increased energy consumption during movement is automatically disabled when this mod is installed, as it implements even higher exhaustion values.
❤️ Health and Hunger
- Passive health regeneration 🏥 – restores ½ heart every 10 seconds when satiety is sufficient.
- If the "I'm Movens" mod is installed, regeneration occurs every 30 seconds.
- No full healing from hunger ❌ – difficulty-based health restoration removed.
- Increased cooking time ⏳ – food preparation now takes longer, making survival more challenging.
🏕️ Campfire Redesigned
- Campfire requires fuel 🔥 – now functions as a mini-furnace and can only cook one food item at a time.
- New campfire recipe – crafted in a 2×2 grid, making it easier to create but requiring a fire-starter to ignite.
🏺 "Oven" System (New Furnaces and Smokers)
- Replaces regular furnaces, blast furnaces, and smokers – new blocks called "Ovens" will replace them all. Currently, only the Brick Oven is available, but versions for smokers and blast furnaces will be added later.
- Completely interface-free 🔥 – ovens use an interactive, realistic system for cooking.
- Unique functionality for each oven type – special mechanics make each oven type more engaging and useful.
🕯️ Torches Overhauled
-
Lighting 🔥 – torches must be lit to produce light. Unlit torches provide no illumination.
-
Water and weather effects 🌊🌧️:
- Crude torches extinguish and break when submerged in water or during rain.
- Normal torches (infinite) extinguish in water but can be relit and don't go out in rain. Video demonstrating torch mechanics
-
Crafting 🛠️:
- Basic torches: crafted using the original Minecraft recipe. These torches burn out after 20 minutes.
- Infinite torches: crafted using the standard recipe plus glowstone dust in a 3×3 crafting grid. These torches burn indefinitely.
🔥 Burn Time Adjustments
Logs are now the primary fuel source, and burn times for many combustible items have been changed.
🏚️ World Generation and Structure Changes
- Villages now spawn only zombie villagers 🧟.
- Zombie villagers:
- Do not burn in sunlight ☀️❌.
- Do not despawn quickly, posing a constant threat.
- Loot rework 🎁 – all chests in generated worlds have been rebalanced for fairness (no easy loot).
- Melons removed 🍉❌ – no more melon patches in world generation or villages.
- Iron golems removed 🚫 – no longer spawn in villages.
🐄 Animal Changes
- Passive mobs no longer respawn 🐄❌ – players must breed and preserve existing animals instead of relying on infinite spawning.
📝 Planned Features and Minor Changes
- Wooden blocks (excluding logs) will break into sticks when mined with an iron axe or worse (planned feature).
- Major modifications – this mod is quite extensive and changes many game aspects, so before full release some features might be moved to individual mods/datapacks.
Self-Sustainable completely transforms Minecraft survival, forcing players to plan ahead, manage hunger wisely, and respect nature's limits. With strategic movement, realistic fire-starting, and a tougher world, every choice matters.
