Simply Improved Terrain

The Simply Improved Terrain modification fundamentally reworks certain terrain generation components in Minecraft, significantly enhancing the visual appeal of the world while maintaining the classic vanilla style. The main focus is on increasing directional diversity, eliminating grid artifacts, and expanding shape variability. The mod is designed as a universal solution compatible with most modpacks and datapacks.

  • Elimination of square corrugations in terrain through separation of 3D noise into independent interpolation channels and removal of interpolation for 2D noise
  • Removal of angular biases in large-scale landforms by applying domain rotation to noise generators
  • Localization of height variations in windswept/shattered biomes through individual cell offsets
  • Maximization of regional diversity through standardization of noise generator offsets
  • Reduction of 45-degree artifacts in ice and surface patterns by expanding the gradient vector table
  • Elimination of interval locking at biome borders through sample range correction, switching to aggregated weight falloff, and bypassing subsampling
  • Removal of grid effects in End island generator and smoothing of intersection transitions using full-resolution metaballs
  • Rounding of shape distributions for lava lakes and basalt formations through isotropic spread formulas
  • Breaking monotony in surface deposits and small End island features by adding falloff noise

Functionality (Version 1.16)

  • Replacement of trilinear interpolation with dynamic noise layer skipping for practical use of full-resolution noise with removal of problematic high-frequency layers, eliminating most grid patterns
  • Application of domain rotation to noise to remove angular biases in the horizontal world plane, adding missing large-scale directional variation with minimal retuning
  • Redesigned implementation of terrain noise "shelves" with height localization, domain rotation consideration, and no interpolation requirement for smoothing
  • Integration of domain rotation into existing noise to extend functionality of other elements
  • Replacement of gradient vectors in 2D surface block noise with a symmetric 24-element set reducing 45-degree artifacts
  • Update of End island generator with full-resolution jittered metaballs to eliminate grid patterns and improve merging of intersecting islands
  • Removal of sharp edges from disc-shaped sand, gravel, clay, and ice deposits with added radius variations (idea borrowed from Origin Realms)
  • Replacement of Overworld biome transition smoothing with scattered sampling to mask the underlying 4x4 grid and river widening to prevent constrictions
  • Elimination of directional bias in netherrack patterns under ruined portals by replacing |Δx|+|Δz| falloff with Euclidean-based falloff
