Spice of Life: Carrot Edition

About the Mod Concept

This mod offers a completely new approach to the food system in Minecraft! Instead of punishing players for a monotonous diet, it rewards them for dietary variety. The principle of "carrot and stick" is replaced here exclusively with the "carrot" - hence the name mentioning carrots!

Although the name resembles the original Spice of Life, this is a completely independent development that is compatible with it. The main idea is preserved but implemented with the opposite effect.

Main Features

The mod tracks how many different types of food the player has eaten. Upon reaching certain milestones in the number of unique food items, the player permanently gains increased maximum health in the form of additional hearts! To completely fill the health bar, you'll have to search for exotic ingredients and master complex cooking recipes.

The mod's settings allow adjusting the player's starting heart count (can be set lower than the standard 10), as well as determining how many unique foods need to be eaten to reach each subsequent milestone. The number of hearts added for each milestone is also configurable.

Default settings allow increasing health from 10 to 20 hearts using most non-poisonous foods from vanilla Minecraft. However, the mod is primarily created for modpack authors who want to add Pam's HarvestCraft or other food mods - this adds interest and motivates players to explore complex culinary systems. Finally, player-"chefs" will take an honorable place alongside miners and engineers!

To track progress, the mod includes a convenient book called the "Food Book," crafted by simply combining a book and a carrot in a crafting table. This book displays overall progress, as well as lists of eaten and yet untried foods (the latter can be disabled in settings).

Commands

The mod includes three useful commands:

  • /foodlist size
Shows the number of unique foods you've already eaten and how many remain until the next milestone.
  • /foodlist clear
Clears the list of eaten foods and resets the heart count. Useful for testing when changing settings or if you want to start over.
  • /foodlist sync
Forces synchronization of the food list with the client if something went wrong and the data doesn't match.

Important Information About Settings for Versions 1.13+

Starting from version 1.12, Forge transitioned to a new configuration system, so Spice of Life: Carrot now has two places for settings (three if counting default values). Client settings (such as visual options) are in the regular config folder and are not synchronized between server and client. Server settings (milestones/hearts/blacklist/etc.) are stored in a serverconfig folder (even in singleplayer!) inside each world and synchronized with the client, for example: saves/[your world name]/serverconfig/solcarrot-server.toml. You can set default values by placing a copy in the defaultconfigs folder, i.e., at defaultconfigs/solcarrot-server.toml.

Additional Information

  • Mod versions before 1.14 require installation of AppleCore.
