The Masquerade (Illager Boss)

This mod introduces a new powerful illager boss - the Masquerader, who uses various masks, each granting him unique combat abilities.

Invitation to the Ball

In pillager outposts, you can sometimes find a Mysterious Red Envelope. These are invitations from the Masquerader, who is organizing a social event for high-ranking illagers, including outpost captains. Opening the envelope reveals an invitation to a masquerade ball and a map leading to the event venue.

Note: When opening the envelope, the game may freeze for a few seconds - this is related to the map generation process.

The Masquerade Ball

Arriving fashionably late to the ball, you'll find yourself in a huge ballroom filled with invited illagers and one unlucky villager whose mask currently hides his identity. The Masquerader observes the proceedings from an elevated position and remains invulnerable as long as all other illagers are alive. To fight him, you'll first have to deal with the ball guests.

The Masquerader's Masks

The Masquerader uses four types of masks, each based on a specific type of illager:

No Mask

In this phase, the Masquerader is almost inactive - only running after you with a sword. However, once his health decreases, the real fun begins.

Mask of Evocation

  • Vexes: summons 15 vexes with 2 health points each. They disappear when the mask is changed
  • Fangs: creates fangs in four different patterns - concentric circles around himself, around the target, lines, and rapid attack directly on the target

Mask of Displacement

  • Clones: creates 9 copies of himself around the player, who attack with bows. Find the real one or wait for them to disappear
  • Mirror Images: after the clones disappear, creates four invulnerable reflections, similar to the Illusioner
  • Blindness: can temporarily blind the target
  • Fireworks: instead of arrows, shoots fireworks in triple volleys

Mask of Fury

  • Roar and Charge: emits a loud roar and rushes forward in a straight line, knocking back and setting mobs on fire in its path
  • Crossbow Volleys: quickly fires five volleys of five burning arrows each
  • Axe: between attacks, pursues the target with an axe

Mask of Arcanity

  • Potion Rain: quickly creates many potions and throws them into the air, causing them to fall across the entire area around him
  • Potion Throw: throws potions at the target, which can apply various weakening effects, sometimes even lingering ones
  • Potion Drinking: when putting on the mask, drinks a potion giving regeneration 2 and resistance 3. After some time, drinks a healing potion. Can drink other potions depending on circumstances

Loot

After defeating the Masquerader, you'll receive emeralds and a blank mask. Using certain materials and a bit of magic, this mask can be turned into one of the four Masquerader masks:

Mask of Evocation: When worn and used with an empty hand, you can summon a line of fangs on the ground. Cooldown: 2 seconds

Mask of Displacement: Allows teleportation a significant distance horizontally in the direction you're looking. Doesn't pass through blocks. Cooldown: 10 seconds

Mask of Fury: Emits a powerful roar that knocks back nearby mobs and gives strength 2 and resistance 2 for a short time. Cooldown: 15 seconds

Mask of Arcanity: Gives a beneficial potion effect: fire resistance when on fire, water breathing underwater, regeneration when low on health, and speed in other cases. Cooldown: 30 seconds

New Ally

If the masked villager somehow managed to survive the battle, you can trade with him. He can convert any of the four special masks back into a blank mask for a small fee if you want to try another one.

Raid Spawning

If the Masquerader participates in a raid, he gets a forcefield that makes him invulnerable until all other raid participants are destroyed. This system is borrowed from the Illage and Spillage mod. If you use both mods, you can add the Masquerader to the boss randomizer to make him harmonize with other I&S bosses. However, due to the implementation specifics of forcefields in I&S, you cannot have an official I&S boss and the Masquerader in the same wave, otherwise their forcefields will be active forever.
