Tinkerer's Smithing

Tinkerer's Smithing Banner

Tinkerer's Smithing is a comprehensive overhaul of equipment crafting and enhancement systems, introducing new possibilities for crafting and repairing gear in Minecraft.

Key Features

The mod completely transforms the approach to creating and improving equipment, offering:

  • Free Repair — restoring durability of any item without experience costs (including fishing rods)
  • Cross-material Upgrades — ability to upgrade tools and armor between different material tiers (even chainmail armor)
  • Gradual Progression — system encourages step-by-step improvement of your first equipment set
  • Useful Treasure — all enchanted items found in treasure chests become truly valuable
  • Balance Without Restrictions — instead of weakening or removing Mending enchantment, other mechanics are enhanced
  • Balanced Recipes — all recipes are based on standard equipment costs in vanilla game

Mechanic Changes

Broken Equipment Keepers (Broken Equipment)

  • Named or enchanted equipment doesn't break
  • Broken equipment is ineffective until repaired

New Possibilities

Treasure Upgrading Useful Treasure All standard materials are interconnected through the upgrade tree. It doesn't matter if Protection IV leggings are made of gold, chainmail, or leather — simply upgrade them to the right material and use them on an anvil.

Miscellaneous Repair Miscellaneous Repair All previously unrepairable items now have repair recipes — including utility tools.

Modpack Configuration

Recipes are defined through configuration of Tool Materials, Armor Materials, Equipment Types, and Unit Cost Overrides.

  • Materials inherit from standard tool/armor materials. They define upgrade paths, e.g., Iron→Diamond
    • By default, all standard materials are defined
  • Types define "similar" items. Items with matching types can upgrade
    • By default, 5 tool types (e.g., c:swords) and 4 armor slots are defined
  • Unit Cost is the cost of upgrading or repairing an item. Usually determined from material and recipe
    • By default, standard items that aren't tools/armor become repairable through override
    • Netherite is also overridden to use appropriate diamond costs

Compatibility

The mod works server-side but with additional optimization (and better EMI support) on the client. Requires Connector and FFAPI on Forge.

For Minecraft 1.15-1.17, version 1.0 is available as a datapack for NBT Crafting.
