Traveler's Staves
Overview
Traveler's Staves is a compact mod that introduces a new type of tools to the game: staves. These are not magical wands but sturdy support poles designed for performing high jumps. Each staff has two main functions: vertical jumping and protection from minor fall damage. However, there is a drawback - when using a staff, horizontal movement speed is usually reset.
Crafting staves requires more resources compared to tools made from similar materials, but they have increased durability, which can deplete quickly with active use.
Since the staff will be constantly in hand during travels, starting from metal models, most staff types can be personalized by wrapping the handle with wool of any color from the vanilla game. Netherite staves can also be decorated with metal inserts along the edges, similar to how armor is trimmed.
Vertical Jumps
Right-clicking with a staff in hand allows performing a vertical jump. The jump height depends on the staff material, starting from 3 blocks for the simplest models. To jump, you must be standing on solid ground.
Jump heights by material:
- 3 blocks: All wooden staves, andesite, diorite, granite, stone
- 4 blocks: Smooth stone, copper, gold, amethyst, lapis (normal), redstone
- 4.5 blocks: Iron
- 5 blocks: Diamond
- 6 blocks: Netherite, lapis (empowered)
Fall Protection
Each staff has a specific fall damage absorption threshold - from 2 to 6 damage points. If you're holding a staff and receive fall damage that doesn't exceed this threshold, the damage will be completely prevented. However, this protection comes at a cost: the staff will take damage equal to the prevented damage (plus 75% additional damage when falling on dripstone), and you will receive a slowness effect for 4 seconds.
The system considers the initial damage before applying modifiers, so the Feather Falling enchantment won't help increase safe fall height. But each level of this enchantment reduces the slowness duration by 1 second.
Damage absorption thresholds:
- 2 damage: All wooden staves, all stone staves, amethyst staff
- 3 damage: Copper, lapis (normal), redstone
- 4 damage: Iron
- 5 damage: Diamond
- 6 damage: Netherite, lapis (empowered)
Customization
Using the staff worktable, you can wrap the handle with wool of any color. This decision can be undone at any time by selecting the "Remove Current Decorations" option. Iron, gold, copper, amethyst, diamond, and netherite staves can be decorated. Netherite staves can also be adorned with metal inserts using any armor trim materials. The worktable interface is intuitive and explains all possibilities directly in the game.
Special Staves
The mod includes several staves with unique properties:
Gold Staff
- Instead of the standard horizontal speed reset (x0 multiplier) has a built-in x2.5 multiplier
Amethyst Staff
- Doesn't have standard knockback properties, instead inflicts attacked targets with a bleeding effect
- In vanilla game can only affect "fleshy" targets
- When used in any way, causes minor bleeding to you if the handle isn't wrapped
Lapis Staff
- When in the offhand, accumulates experience until the meter is full
- With full charge and use in the offhand, allows performing a super high jump and restores some durability
Redstone Staff
- In the offhand, accumulates charge when standing on redstone power sources
- With full charge, fires a small projectile that upon landing applies "Overcharged" effect to enemies in a small radius for 6.5 seconds
- Overcharged mobs cannot target you specifically but still deal contact damage
- Attacking an overcharged target removes the effect and deals 3 damage to both parties
- Iron golems ignore the overcharge effect and instead receive strength and speed for 5.5 seconds
