Utility Staves 2

The Utility Staves mod has finally been ported to version 1.16.5! Along with this, new features, bug fixes, and general improvements to the modification have arrived. (This page does not apply to Utility Staves versions 1.14.4 and below).

Updated Mechanics and Features

Staff functionality has been slightly changed and gained new capabilities.

Wall Jumping

Staves now allow you to push off walls in a horizontal direction when used near them. The normal jump height with a staff is reduced by 35%, and the character is thrown in the opposite direction from the wall. When jumping from a corner, the player will be thrown diagonally in the opposite direction.

Each staff has its own horizontal distance value that is independent of vertical jump height. This means some staves are better suited for covering horizontal distances. For example, the gold staff now provides the greatest horizontal distance rather than the highest vertical jump.

Reworked Offhand Ability

Previously, the fall prevention ability in the offhand was too powerful and completely eliminated the threat of fall damage. Now, using this mechanic involves risk. Staves can still neutralize all fall damage, but only from a certain height above the ground. Each staff has a different maximum height value for safe landing.

If you fail to soften your fall due to being too high up, the staff will go on cooldown for 1 second and make a sword swoosh sound. This is called a "whiff." When you whiff, you take the normal fall damage you would have received.

Three New Enchantments

This update adds three new enchantments:

  • Leaping: Up to level 5, each level increases staff jump height by 5% (maximum 25%)
  • Kickback: Up to level 5, each level increases wall jump distance by 6% (maximum 30%)
  • Softening: Up to level 3, each level increases the height from which the offhand ability doesn't whiff by 1 block (maximum 3 blocks)

Kickback and Leaping enchantments cannot be on the same staff simultaneously.

New Staves

This update introduces six new staves, five of which are alternatives to existing models: Crimson Wood Staff, Warped Wood Staff, Andesite Staff, Diorite Staff, and Granite Staff.

A bamboo staff has also been added. Its durability is between stone and iron staves, and its characteristics range from wooden to iron level.

Emerald and Gold Staff Changes

The emerald staff now has the same vertical jump height as iron, but with slightly faster jump cooldown and slightly greater wall jump distance.

The gold staff no longer has the highest jump among all staves. Instead, its jump has become average in height but has very long horizontal distance, allowing it to jump further than even netherite staff when wall jumping.

Keep an eye out for future updates, but for now these are the main changes to the mod.
