Whisperwoods

Whisperwoods was developed for the MMD Spookyjam 2019 horror-themed event. This atmospheric addition fills Minecraft's forest biomes with mysterious and frightening creatures, making gameplay more intense and engaging.
Thanks to the Architectury framework, the mod is available for both Forge and Fabric installations.
Mod Content
Moths
Harmless flying insects that appear at night in forest areas. They're attracted to light sources, including dangerous ones like fire. Moths can gather around torches and accidentally break them.
Hidebehind
A terrifying creature that, according to legends, is responsible for the disappearances of lumberjacks and travelers. It silently stalks its prey, hiding behind trees and seemingly merging with them when detected. However, its bright eyes can reveal its presence, and it avoids bright lighting. If the hidebehind manages to approach its victim, it devours them in a few bites, leaving no remains.
Wisps
Mysterious gaseous spirits inhabiting forests and swamps. They move chaotically through space and vanish when approached. Some wisps can tear the soul from a living being and use it as fuel for their flame. This leads to certain death unless the wisp is destroyed in time to release the soul. When killed, wisps may drop a Ghost Light.
Ghost Lights
Light sources resembling wisps that can be placed anywhere. They emit colored flames and moderate amounts of light.
Wisp Lanterns
Crafted by surrounding a ghost light with iron nuggets.
Hirschgeist
A mini-boss, a forest spirit with powerful fire attacks capable of summoning wisps for assistance in battle.
Hirschgeist Skull
An item dropped after defeating the hirschgeist. Repels dangerous spirits and can be used as a decorative element.
Hand of Fate
An occult artifact for summoning otherworldly beings. Activated using ghost lights or blaze powder (press SHIFT while viewing the tooltip for recipe information).
Zotzpyre
A vampiric creature found in caves and appearing at night in jungles.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the Hand of Fate work? I add the first item, but another appears and nothing is summoned?
The item displayed in the Hand of Fate indicates the next required component. Add items in sequence as they appear, and when all are added, the mob will be summoned.
Can the mod be used in modpacks?
Yes, provided it's hosted on CurseForge or for private use.
Where are the configuration files located?
- Server settings (single player): saves/(world)/serverconfigs/whisperwoods-server.(toml/json5)
- Dedicated server: /world/serverconfigs/whisperwoods-server.(toml/json5)
- Client settings: (minecraft folder)/configs/whisperwoods-client.(toml/json5)
How are items crafted?
Use the "Just Enough Items" mod to view recipes directly in the game.
Is the mod compatible with biome modifications?
Yes, provided the mods use Forge's Biome Dictionary system. This includes Biomes O Plenty, Traverse, and many others.
How to disable or modify creature spawning?
Use configuration files. Set the "spawn_naturally" parameter (formerly "do_spawning") to false to disable natural spawning. You can also adjust spawn frequency and suitable biomes.
How to set default configuration for new worlds?
Place the whisperwoods-server.(toml/json5) file in the defaultconfigs folder for automatic copying to new saves.
Why isn't the hidebehind doing anything or moving?
The hidebehind doesn't wander aimlessly - it stalks prey. However, it won't pursue targets in light or during daytime, except in dark places. This is intentional behavior, not a bug.
Can zotzpyres or other creatures be tamed?
No. This mod adds forest horrors, not cute pets and friendly animals.
Will creatures become tamable in the future?
No. If a mob is initially untamable, there's a good reason for it, and this won't change.
Is there a Fabric version?
Yes!
Which mod loaders does the mod support?
The mod works on Forge and Fabric through the Architectury framework.
