Meet the newest mob in update 1.1.0: the Woodpecker!
This update brings an adorable and playful new bird, as well as additional improvements and additions for Birch Forests!
NOTE:
This video is slightly outdated as the "Scroll of Secrets" has been temporarily removed from the mod. Instead, Nest Boxes can be crafted using a Woodpecker Crest Feather and planks.
The Story of "The Wild Update"
(Skip if only interested in mod details)
During Minecraft Live 2021, the game community was shown a magnificent update to the Overworld called "The Wild Update". It promised to significantly improve biomes, atmosphere, and other aspects of the game world, which generated great enthusiasm among players.
Unfortunately, reality turned out to be completely different. Instead of the promised large-scale update, we received what many called "The Mild Update" - an incoherent and unfinished set of changes that only vaguely resembled the original promises.
Although some additions were generally decent, they required refinement and polishing. The true "Wild Update" was discarded for unknown reasons, and it's unknown if it will ever return to the game.
After this situation, I decided to take matters into my own hands and create what should have been the real "Wild Update".
What does this mod do?
Wondrous Wilds aims to become what "The Wild Update" should have been, adding elements that were originally planned for it, improving existing aspects, and significantly expanding the capabilities of the Overworld. The main principle of the mod is quality over quantity in all aspects.
Although the mod is in early development stage, a huge number of additions are already planned, including reworking other biomes, creating completely new biomes, and many new features associated with them!
🌳 Reworked Birch Forest
This biome now includes:
- Fancy Birches - new trees that now populate the biome and can grow from saplings, similar to fancy oaks
- Polypores - a new decorative mushroom available in small and large variants, growing on fancy birches. Small polypores can be placed in groups of up to three in one block, while large ones can serve as platforms
- Violets - beautiful new flowers in four different color variants! They grow in large picturesque groups, often mixing together to create even more beautiful compositions. Up to four flowers can be placed in one block for variety
- Hollow Logs - a new type of log with a hole in the middle. Available for all wood types (even from the Nether!), can be crafted, and birch variants generate naturally in the biome. Besides construction and decorative functions, they have interesting features: realistic collision allowing passage through them, waterlogging capability, and others
- Autumn variant - the vanilla "Old Growth" biome variant is transformed into autumn theme with higher tree density and yellow, orange, and red foliage instead of only green. Grass also has a different color matching the new theme
🦟 Fireflies
- Can move by both flying and walking, switching between these modes
- Have complex data-driven spawning system. In warm and humid biomes (Swamps, Mangrove Swamps, Jungles, Rivers, etc.) they spawn on the surface at night, while in others - only during rain (Plains, Forests, etc.). Sometimes they can be found in Lush Caves underground. These three spawning methods are controlled using biome tags and can be customized with datapacks
- Occasionally fly to mobs and players to perch on them
- During daylight, try to hide in grass
🐦 Woodpecker
- Moves by hopping on the ground and fast flight in the air
- Makes cute chirping sounds and animations
- Inhabits reworked Birch Forests
- Lives in tree hollows or nest boxes, similar to bees, returning to them to rest at night or during rain
- Avoids wandering too far from home
- Can cling to the sides of any blocks with a flat solid surface and empty space nearby
- Sometimes drums on logs if it has a home, and this sound can be heard from far away
- Without a home, starts drilling and building one by repeatedly pecking at a log
- Defends its homes against intrusions by other woodpeckers or players breaking their dwelling
- Wild individuals fear players unless attacking
- Likes to play with various blocks by interacting with them. Flies to a block, clings to it, and starts randomly pecking
- Each peck when playing with a block simulates interaction, as if a player right-clicked
- The selection of blocks for play is controlled by a block tag that can be supplemented by datapacks and other mods for easy customization and compatibility thanks to 100% dynamic interaction functionality
- Can hold items in its beak if given an item after taming or sometimes spawn with one from a random selection
- Takes the held item into account when interacting with a block, allowing it to use the item and change the interaction outcome, as players do
- Can be tamed by giving blocks it enjoys playing with
- For taming progress, it must successfully interact with a block without interruptions during the playing process
- After taming, can automatically take items from a Nest Box, providing flexible and organized automation of the interaction feature
