Devolution - Returning to Minecraft's Roots
Since childhood, I avidly watched Minecraft videos showcasing outdated designs of game elements. The old gravel and brick textures, the vibrant grass block colors, how the Creeper first appeared - these images still live in every player's memory, reminding us of the era of simplicity in a game famous for its unique yet concise visual style.
About four years ago, I started an interesting project with a friend. Despite having no experience creating resource packs, I had an idea: to show what absolutely every Minecraft element looked like at the dawn of its appearance. We opened a Discord server, collected some images, and I tried to recreate them. The process proved too labor-intensive, so development stopped.
In 2020, I mastered the methods of creating resource packs, and in the summer remembered the abandoned project, realizing I could finally bring my dream to life.
Work continued for a full year, and the result might seem strange - but that's exactly how it should be! The research work took considerable time, and I'm proud of what came out!
Key Features
The basic principle is extremely simple: every item, block, and mob gets its very first appearance design. This isn't just a collection of design solutions from beta or alpha, here are elements from all versions, including the latest - 1.17. Almost all textures and models are taken directly from old game releases, with author recreation kept to a minimum.
We express gratitude to the Minecraft Wiki encyclopedia, which became an invaluable source of samples and data about early versions of Minecraft.
Special thanks to:
- SamiTheAnxiousBean, PinkuRinku, and Pneuma01 - for significant contribution to pack development
- Ewan Howell - for recreating the lectern model and CEM methodology consultations
- BrotherEarth967 - for the old wandering trader texture
- TheBartman - for the old drowned model and appearance

Currently the pack requires Optifine installation.
