Better Burning

The Better Burning mod fundamentally reworks the fire and burning mechanics in Minecraft, making gameplay more balanced and realistic. All presented features can be individually disabled through the configuration file.

Main Features

Burning Skeletons Shoot Burning Arrows

When a skeleton is on fire, it has a chance to shoot a burning arrow. Hitting with such an arrow deals additional fire damage. The default probability is 70%.

Flint and Steel Deals Fire Damage

Attacking a mob with flint and steel deals minor fire damage. Like any other weapon, the item loses durability when used. Standard damage is 3 units.

Fire Resistance Extinguishes Fire

This feature clears the player's burning timer when a fire resistance potion is active. This fixes an annoying vanilla bug where the burning timer continued to increase even with an active potion. For example, when swimming in lava, the fire animation could continue for a long time after exiting it.

Fixing Drops When Killed by Fire

The mod eliminates the inconsistency in checking drop tables when killing mobs with fire. In vanilla, some mobs drop different items when killed by fire - for example, a chicken gives fried chicken instead of raw chicken. However, the standard mechanism only checks for gradual fire damage, not instant damage. This led to situations where campfires and other fire mechanics from mods did not give the correct drops.

Fire Spread During Attacks

When a burning mob attacks another mob with empty hands, there is a chance that the target will also catch fire. This mechanic is based on the vanilla feature of zombies that can spread fire during unarmed attacks. Better Burning extends this function to all mobs. The default spread probability is 30%.
