Oxidizable Copper Gear

This mod implements oxidation mechanics for copper tools and armor, functioning similarly to how copper blocks oxidize in the game. Developers can also utilize this mod as a framework to make any items oxidizable.

Items develop patina when carried in the player's inventory, when equipped, or when dropped on the ground. However, oxidation process stops when items are stored in chests and other containers.

The rate of patina formation roughly matches the oxidation speed of copper blocks. The process intensity additionally depends on the difference between the item's current durability state and its oxidation level.

Crafting Recipes

Copper items can be waxed by combining them with honeycombs in the crafting table. Waxing preserves the current oxidation state and prevents further visual changes.

To remove wax coating, simply combine the item with any axe. After the procedure, the axe remains with the player but loses one durability point.

The axe can also be used to scrape patina off metal surfaces, restoring the item's fresher appearance. In this case, the tool also receives minor damage.

Creating Custom Oxidizable Items

The mod provides a platform for adding oxidation mechanics to any items through creating data packs and resource packs. The default data pack responsible for copper equipment oxidation can be disabled if needed.

To connect your custom items, add them to the special oxidizable tag. This activates all related functions: gradual oxidation, corresponding crafting recipes, and addition of various oxidation stages to creative mode.

In the resource pack, prepare models and textures for each oxidation stage. Item files should be placed in the appropriate namespace of the mod that adds the items, or in the standard minecraft namespace for vanilla items.
