Starlight represents a fundamental overhaul of Minecraft's lighting system, aimed at resolving performance issues and fixing errors related to light calculations.

Compatibility and Installation

The mod can be installed either on the server or client version of the game. There is no need to install it on both sides simultaneously. If Starlight is installed on the server, clients can connect using standard Vanilla lighting, Phosphor, or Starlight. Similarly, when the mod is installed on the client, you can connect to servers with any of these lighting options.

It's important to note that Starlight is completely incompatible with Phosphor - they cannot be installed together. Since the mod completely rewrites the lighting mechanism, it may cause conflicts with other mods. It's recommended to check compatibility before installation.

Purpose and Benefits

Starlight was originally developed for large servers where the standard lighting system created serious performance problems. The solution was a deep reworking of the entire light calculation mechanism, which significantly improved performance.

Although the mod is a rather invasive solution, its performance benefits outweigh potential compatibility risks, especially for high-load servers.

Performance in Version 1.20

In the current Minecraft 1.20 version, Starlight demonstrates significant performance improvements in two key scenarios: when editing blocks at high altitudes and during standard block lighting updates.

Performance in Versions 1.19.4 and Below

For older game versions, the mod shows even more impressive results, significantly speeding up three critical processes: chunk generation, block editing at high altitudes, and standard lighting updates.
