Overview
British Rail Class 321 is an electric multiple unit train of British manufacture, produced by British Rail Engineering Limited between 1988 and 1991 for British railways.
Model History
Class 321/3 - The first 46+20 units entered service in 1987 on Network SouthEast routes connecting London Liverpool Street station with Cambridge and Southend. These trains replaced outdated Classes 305, 307, 308 and 309 models. Some units (30 pieces) underwent modernization under the Renatus project in Doncaster. Currently, all Class 321/3 units have been withdrawn from regular service - most have been scrapped, some are stored in Ilford and Warrington, and units 321334, 339, 341 are used by Varamis Rail company.
Class 321/4 - The second batch of 30+18 trains was put into operation in 1988. Initially, they serviced western routes from London Euston station to Northampton, Rugby and Birmingham. Later, some units were transferred to the eastern Great Eastern Main Line direction. Following the introduction of modern Class 350/2, London Midland company transferred 13 trains to First Capital Connect, 17 to National Express East Anglia, 7 to Abellio ScotRail (where they were reclassified as Class 320/4). Most of them have already been scrapped, except for 12 Class 320/4 units, Varamis Rail units (321407, 419, 428, 429, 440), as well as 321434 (for filming purposes) and 321443 (stored for special needs).
Class 321/9 - The final batch of three units ordered by Regional Railways for the Doncaster-Leeds line, later transferred to Greater Anglia to replace Class 360s and finally scrapped in 2022.
